With the closing of another commercial unit on the outskirts of Durham – Asbestos Audit Ltd has been carrying out refurbishment asbestos surveys to assist the client with remodelling of the store.

The project is aimed at regenerating the Durham area and bringing the old commercial units back to life. Years of non maintenance by the previous tenants had left its tole on the property.

With the old building being vacant and no sign of the asbestos register the property was not compliant with the current Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Asbestos Audit Ltd was brought in to sort out the lack of register and associated AMP (Asbestos Management Plan). Full inspections to HSG-264 and ISO17020 were undertaken.

Following the asbestos survey a number of hazardous asbestos products were located including asbestos insulating board debris within some of the areas. Where required the material as removed to the current regulations.

Without an asbestos survey this could have resulted in the workforce carrying out the refurbishment works potentially being exposed to asbestos fibres. Thankfully this was all avoided by having the asbestos survey carried out well in advance of the proposed refurbishment works.

The property is now fully compliant with the asbestos products removed and a new happy tenant and happier landlord.
