ASBESTOS AWARENESS WEEK 2023

WHAT IS ASBESTOS AWARENESS WEEK 2023

During Global Asbestos Awareness Week (1-7 April 2023), the Institution is reminding people that asbestos exists in many millions of buildings worldwide and, when not managed properly, poses a severe threat to people’s health.

About Global Asbestos Awareness Week

Organized by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), Global Asbestos Awareness Week is held annually at the beginning of April to raise awareness by sharing stories and seek better prevention.

This year’s week is labelled ‘One Word, One Week, One World’ and has four key focus areas:

  • Banning the mining, manufacturing, and use of all six asbestos fibres around the world

  • Preventing asbestos exposure

  • Increasing compliance and enforcement of existing laws and regulations

  • Strengthening international partnerships to protect public health

Here are some insights about asbestos!

  • Six distinct minerals from two mineral families, Serpentine and Amphibole, are regarded as Asbestos. All types of Asbestos are very harmful to health, and exposure can cause the onset of several fatal conditions including Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer.

The three primary forms of Asbestos are:

  • Asbestos-containing materials are estimated to be present in more than 1.5 million buildings in the UK. Strict regulations exist to prevent dangerous levels of Asbestos exposure. If a building has been built before the year 2000, there is a possibility that it could contain Asbestos. The current data issued by the HSE on Asbestos statistics can be found here.

  • The main reason Asbestos is referred to as the hidden killer is its microscopic fibres which are invisible to the naked eye.

Certain rock types contain this naturally occurring hazardous material, which is composed of long, thin fibres that break down and are too small for the human eye to see.

An Asbestos fibre typically measures 0.1-10µm, which is about 0.001-0.01mm in length. Furthermore, they are tasteless and odourless which is why you may be exposed to Asbestos fibres without even realising it - Hence - “The Hidden Killer” tag.
